Cool Beans!

We usually have a variety of coffee here at the office. But we be runnin short and only have this "Columbian Supremo" that is just bitter to me! (I know there are folks, that like that though). So got to make a coffee run!

Ooh, can't forget the Starbuck's gift card I won at a friend's halloween party last year. $5! I went around asking for orders. Got 2.

1. Grande-Decaf-Lowfat-Misto
2. Venti-Latte-Non Fat-No Whip-Hazelnut...uh, no, better make that Vanilla
3. Grande Caramel Macchiato (I'm still the simple straightshooter)

Is there a published dictionary for the hundred ways you can order your coffee at Starbucks? Do they have "animal style" like In-n-Out? Aha! Gotcha Mr. Big-Chain-Coffee-Giant! j/k. Seriously though, I was glad I wrote the orders down.

So in my feable little mind I wonder:
-how do people know how they like their coffee? did they taste test different versions?
-if people have such specialized orders; did they first make it themselves, and then got too busy to make on their own?
-does it cost extra after a certain number of items in your order?
-how do Starbuck's baristas train for the "unknown concoctions"?
-did they ever add too many things to where an order began to not look like "coffee"?
-next time I'm going to ask: "What has been the hardest order you have had to make?"

I asked the guy at the cashier if there was a dictionary of the different ways they have made coffee. He chuckled, and said "nope".

Darn, now that I think of it, I must have ordered easy ones.

OK Win, I told you I would own this one. Here are the responses from a well-trained barista.

-how do people know how they like their coffee? did they taste test different versions?

If you ask us what you like, we tend to suggest something to you. If you don't like it, we'll make something else for you free of charge.

-if people have such specialized orders; did they first make it themselves, and then got too busy to make on their own?

Some people want more caffeine = more shots of espresso. Something sweeter = more pumps of syrup. On Atkins = Breve rather than regular milk. Diabetic = Sugar Free syrups

-does it cost extra after a certain number of items in your order?

YES, except whip cream is always free. =)

-how do Starbuck's baristas train for the "unknown concoctions"?

We don't. It comes with natural coffee making talents.

-did they ever add too many things to where an order began to not look like "coffee"?

YES - and it looks pretty gross. hopefully it still tastes good.

-next time I'm going to ask: "What has been the hardest order you have had to make?"

Maybe not the hardest order, but I hate steaming eggnog (makes an obnoxious loud screeching sound), Chantico - ick..., All in all, they're usually not that "hard".
