Feelin Crabby...and Oh so deliciou-oso!

Finally after 9 long hard months at work and meeting one of most important deadlines of the year, it is safe to say that I was able to comfortably enjoy a weekend of rest. To kick things off, I joined my fab-2 homies for an early morning tee-off at Costa Mesa Golf Club. Back-9 special of course. OF COURSE!! Then when I got back home, I naturally got in that mode of thinking that I have put aside for the last several months: "what new thing can I attempt to cook?"

I pulled 2 cookbooks that I acquired over the years as gifts, "Cooking the Costco Way" and "How to Cook Everything", and I began to flip through the through the pages, hoping something would jump out at me.

An hour passes by, and I'm still looking. Don't you hate when you get to that point where you spent too much time thinking about something, you almost drown-out your own enthusiasm?

Uh Uh. Not this time.

So I close my eyes, I dig deep, and there it is, page 331. Crab cakes. Of course! I've always wanted to learn and make crab cakes! I stick with it.

Alright, the appetizer is chosen, now for the main dish. The first thing that came to mind next was Pesto. Hmm, something with Pesto. So I ask my roommate for his Pesto recipe. Since I have spent about an hour and a half already, I decided to keep it simple. Main dish: Grilled chicken w/ Pesto over Fetticine. I asked my other roommate to come up with a vegetable dish to add to the meal. His contribution: sauteed asparagus w/ sun dried tomatoes.

As I was making the crab cakes, I stumbled upon another similar recipe, which called for worchester sauce. Being the crazy experimenter that I am, I decide to add some, along with some chives and a squeeze of lemon. When I cook from a recipe, I almost always add/change to it. The worchester sauce was a good call!

The neatest part of the dinner was cooking it together with my roommates. Tim prepared his pesto, James prepped his asparagus dish, and I was all over the crab cakes!

For my first time, the crab cakes came out pretty good. I pan crisped them, which gave it a nice outer coating. Next time, I will add a bit more lemon and more pepper for spice. My quest to perfect a crab cake recipe has begun. I was thinking next time instead of mustard, to substitute it with wasabi. Stay tuned for that expiriment.

The pesto was awesome! Everything came together pretty nicely, without being too strenuous or going overboard. In this case, it was ok to feel crabby! O(o.o)O

Win! We should have a crabby themed potluck dinner. =) You definitely should head out to Cantler's in MD one day. Here's the recipe:

MARYLAND CRAB CAKES
1 pound Maryland crabmeat (fresh or pasteurized)
cup cracker crumbs or bread crumbs
2 eggs (or 1 large)
1 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon seafood seasoning
teaspoon white pepper
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon dry mustard

Carefully remove all cartilage from crabmeat. In a bowl, mix together eggs, mayonnaise, seafood seasoning, white pepper, Worcestershire sauce and dry mustard. Add crabmeat; mix evenly and gently. Add cracker crumbs evenly. Shape into 6 cakes. Deep fry in oil at 350F for 2 to 3 minutes until golden brown or sauté in a frying pan with a little oil for 5 minutes on each side.
